The Firefly opened its doors four years and one month ago. In February we will be closing them for good and the house will be demolished by its new owner, Braman Miami. To our land(slum)lord and Braman it’s just business. In those circles bringing down a whole block and forcing its residents out in order to build a parking lot is amicable; something to talk about over drinks at worst. And so we are left to clean up our mess and move along while in a sort of thoughtful denial. The threat of eviction was always hanging over our heads. But after all is said and done, it’s still really hard to swallow.

The Firefly was born from an attempt to fill a void we felt. In a place were everyone seemed content to wet their toes with our corpses and skip town to places that were already breathing. Where independent venues were coming and going like it was a joke. Like The Alley, NOMICO, 5020 and countless other past attempts at a semblance of cohesion and dedication to a space where our ideas and stories could be expressed without having to deal with assholes and thieving promoters. At some point you have to stop walking away shrugging; and try to make yourself useful. So here we stand, now more than ever, knowing what it means to try. The Firefly was an all volunteer, independent, self-funded, DIY punk venue, lending library, bike collective and cultural center. It was far from perfect, but it was home.

We don’t know what happens next for us. But we know that Miami has great things coming and we are looking forward to being a part of it. Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows and events and contributed their time and hearts. We underestimated the impact you would all have on our lives. Now we know better, now we can move on.

Insurgent Theatre is bringing their radical play ULYSSES' CREWMEN to The Firefly on Wednesday, April 14th. Ulysses' Crewmen tells the tale of the kidnapping of a US trade official, refutes lessons from Homer's Odyssey, and confronts the audience with burning questions using revolutionary theatre techniques. The play has been performed throughout the midwest and east coast since August 2009, including a performance at the G20 summit protests in Pittsburgh.

Three incredible friends of ours Jerry, Waffle and Ivy left Miami for Port au Prince, Haiti yesterday; Saturday February, 6. Jerry and Waffle will be helping with relief and building efforts in Haiti for the next few months, Ivy will be there for the next 6 weeks. Ivy set up a blog to communicate their experiences with us and to create further awareness of this great loss. The link to the blog is posted under "Friends Are Monuments" in the sidebar. They will need our support in the days to come.

Hello everyone. On the sidebar under “Matters Of Urgency”there is a link to an organization called Partners In Health. This organization has been providing Medical support to Haiti and other nations in need for many years. If you came to the show on the 23rd a dollar per person is going to them. We will be doing everything in our power to make as many events that happen here somehow benefit this very important cause. Haiti’s culture and its people are an indispensable part of our community and this earthquake really hits home. It’s been wonderful to witness so many folks getting involved in one way or another and if there was ever a bandwagon to jump on, this is it.

Anti-Racist Miami Dade will be hosting a "Hangover Brunch" to help raise
funds for an anti-racism training to be held next fall. It will be a $10
donation to attend. We will have mimosas and all you can eat warm
vegetarian and omnivore brunch food.

A group of activists in Miami have formed Anti-Racist Miami Dade (ARMD).
We are bringing The Peoples Institute for Survival and Beyond to Miami in
Fall 2009 for a weekend-long anti-racism training. We need to raise
thousands of dollars before we can do it! Come on out, help us reach our
goal, and eat good food!

The least we can do is say thank you, it's been about 7 months since this project was carefully tapped out of a horse shoe and without your involvement, excitement and donations we wouldn’t be able to continue it. We’ve gotten a great response from everyone and our hopes lye in that it will only become greater. Here you are the music, you are the security, you are the promoter, you are the author, the storyteller, the builder, crafter and animator of something beyond profit or sponsor; and proof that it can exist on it's own. Sadly, we have an events calendar that sits lonely and threatening to bite. There are no lack of bands and shows to be had but I know that isn't where it all stops in this town. Obviously we can't and won't be able to accommodate to everyone’s event but we want to here from you. Even if it's to tell us what you would like to see happen at this venue. It can be a one time workshop, or a once a week skill-share, an art show, a drum circle, martial arts classes, film nights, I could go on forever, but it’s yours to consider.
